H ome affordability is a challenge for many first-time home- buyers, even as interest rates remain stable and home price growth softens. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), an average American home costs as much as $250,000. With this in mind, researchers at 24/7 Wall St. set out to find one county in each state where housing was the cheapest. For this study, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed NAR Q 3 2018 data for 3,119 counties and county equivalents, all ranked based on me- dian home value. The study revealed that in 34 states, there is at least one county where more than 50 percent of homes cost less than $100,000. Hawaii and Rhode Island were the only locations where no county has a median home value below the national median of $235,000. *Including mortgage Source: 24/7 Wall St., "The County With the Least Expensive Housing Market in Every State" Harmon County, Oklahoma $50,816 $659 Todd County, South Dakota $40,199 $709 McDowell County, West Virginia $35,932 $730 Leslie County, Kentucky $51,550 $772 Audubon County, Iowa $72,664 $784 Allendale County, South Carolina $55,511 $791 Cochran County, Texas $35,767 $802 Monroe County, Arkansas $56,798 $817 Blackford County, Indiana $73,628 $843 Liberty County, Florida $67,559 $843 De Baca County, New Mexico $69,412 $850 Esmeralda County, Nevada $83,563 $850 Tensas Parish, Louisiana $64,341 $850 Lake County, Tennessee $81,761 $855 Wheeler County, Georgia $49,813 $879 Alexander County, Illinois $54,352 $880 Ontonagon County, Michigan $75,085 $883 Clark County, Idaho $108,629 $884 Bent County, Colorado $86,780 $898 Worth County, Missouri $63,683 $904 Crawford County, Ohio $91,880 $939 Apache County, Arizona $51,798 $943 Buchanan County, Virginia $73,552 $946 Cameron County, Philadelphia $76,958 $957 Elk County, Kansas $49,849 $960 Lowndes County, Alabama $62,908 $963 Robeson County, North Carolina $82,505 $964 Aroostook County, Maine $104,510 $982 Allegany County, New York $78,265 $987 Carbon County, Utah $142,387 $987 Gilliam County, Oregon $121,982 $989 Benson County, North Dakota $70,141 $1,003 Modoc County, California $152,797 $1,007 Menominee County, Wisconsin $91,657 $1,056 Kittson County, Minnesota $77,339 $1,058 Garfield County, Washington $160,790 $1,059 Allegany County, Maryland $113,677 $1,060 Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska $83,696 $1,080 Issaquena County, Mississippi $51,872 $1,098 Grant County, Nebraska $58,588 $1,102 Essex County, Vermont $134,687 $1,137 Blaine County, Montana $94,014 $1,156 Hot Springs County, Wyoming $154,348 $1,181 Coos County, New Hampshire $132,002 $1,208 Kent County, Delaware $230,026 $1,460 Hampden County, Massachusetts $223,466 $1,531 Cumberland County, New Jersey $161,596 $1,589 Hawaii County, Hawaii $375,676 $1,605 Windham County, Connecticut $203,646 $1,668 Providence County, Rhode Island $250,303 $1,730 Counties With the Least Expensive Housing Market County Median Home Value Median Monthly Housing Costs*
