D id you know that an average officer is only 45 years old upon retirement from active military ser- vice? The retirement age goes down even further to 42 years for non-disability personnel according to a study by WalletHub that compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia on their ability to provide com- fortable military retirement. The analysis used a data set of 29 key metrics, ranging from veterans per capita and the number of VA health facilities to economic indicators that included housing affordability and job opportunities for vet- erans looking at reassimilation into civilian life. While states such as Iowa, Kansas, North Dakota, and Ohio don't appear high in the overall rankings, they were the top five states for affordable housing for retired vets. In fact, Iowa also got top honors for being the best state for most job opportuni- ties for veterans followed by Connecticut, New Jersey, Maine, and Minnesota. 1 Virginia 60.24 3 5 15 2 Florida 59.55 9 2 16 3 Maine 59.26 7 27 1 4 New Hampshire 57.23 6 11 20 5 Massachusetts 56.47 1 49 2 6 Alaska 56.35 12 10 13 7 Minnesota 56.30 8 32 7 8 South Dakota 56.23 14 34 3 9 Idaho 55.74 10 21 9 10 South Carolina 55.11 21 1 35 11 Connecticut 54.46 25 23 6 12 Oklahoma 53.58 19 6 37 13 Alabama 52.44 2 13 47 14 Maryland 52.42 13 4 49 15 Texas 52.22 5 33 34 16 Montana 52.01 40 14 8 17 North Carolina 51.30 26 12 24 18 Wyoming 50.95 33 3 45 19 Louisiana 50.90 23 28 22 20 Arkansas 50.90 24 31 17 21 California 50.72 46 9 14 22 Georgia 50.54 11 17 44 23 Pennsylvania 50.43 45 35 4 24 Arizona 50.30 27 8 41 25 Nebraska 50.16 28 16 25 26 Wisconsin 49.98 32 30 12 27 Iowa 49.60 17 29 39 28 Washington 49.59 22 26 30 29 Delaware 49.56 47 7 29 30 Kentucky 49.02 20 38 26 31 Michigan 48.91 34 43 10 32 Tennessee 48.62 4 48 38 33 Missouri 48.07 44 18 23 34 Rhode Island 47.99 18 46 28 35 West Virginia 47.54 15 40 42 36 Ohio 47.52 39 39 11 37 Colorado 47.25 41 15 32 38 Illinois 47.24 31 44 19 39 North Dakota 47.24 48 22 21 40 Kansas 47.06 42 24 27 41 Hawaii 46.80 38 25 36 42 New Jersey 45.95 35 20 46 43 Utah 45.52 36 41 21 44 Indiana 45.27 29 45 33 45 Nevada 45.18 16 42 51 46 New Mexico 44.48 37 19 48 47 Mississippi 44.28 30 37 43 48 New York 41.69 51 47 5 49 Vermont 40.04 50 36 40 50 Oregon 38.49 43 51 18 51 District of Columbia 34.05 49 50 50
