MDWELL The Agony of Deceit Despite a stabilizing economy, mortgage application fraud is still a very present reality in the industry. The risk for it was down 5.6 percent in Q3 2013 compared to last year, but an estimated $5.3 billion in bogus applications were submitted to lenders in the second quarter, according to CoreLogic. The firm attributes the growth in the dollar amount to the "market lifting all boats, including the number and size of fraudulent loan applications." CoreLogic's index measures the propensity for dishonest apps independent of the size of the mortgage market or changes in the prices of homes.
