mnotes "The Times They Are a-Changin'" As the Origination Market Continues to Transform, We Take a Look at the Players, the Products, and the Regulatory Landscape W hen putting together this issue, I couldn't help but get this classic Bob Dylan tune stuck in my head. While the mortgage industry is comprised of a multitude of different sectors and players, the one thing that affects all mortgage professionals is change. To reflect this, MReport dedicated this issue to the evolution affecting the mortgage originators. This month's cover story, "The New Originations Landscape" takes an in-depth look at today's leaders on the origination side by taking stock of where the industry has been, where it stands now, and where it is headed. One of the biggest changes pre-and post- mortgage crisis is the increasing number of nonbanks and less traditional lenders who now originate more loans than ever before. With insights by companies such as Quicken Loans and Guaranteed Rate, this article is a must-read on today's most significant industry players and trends. Expanding on the idea of transfor- mations in the lending environment is Howard Michalski, executive manag- ing director of W.J. Bradley Mortgage Capital, one of the largest, privately held residential mortgage banking firms in the U.S. In his article "Keeping Up with the Customer," Michalski deftly outlines the most-pressing challenges that lenders currently face and proposes a new path forward that will help lenders better connect with the borrower. In "Fewer Lending Options Means Originators Must Get Creative," Casey Crawford, co-founder and CEO of Movement Mortgage, outlines the way that companies like his are adjusting to a marketplace that does not offer as many loan products as in the past. According to Crawford, today's originators are "modifying their underwriting schedules, leveraging new marketing tools, using technology to their advantage, and shift- ing the way the mortgage industry is seen as whole." June's Tech guide is chock full of info on some of the companies lead- ing the way in the lending technology space who provide a variety of loan origination services. To complement our guide, we bring you the article "Trending Tech: Changing the Way Mortgage Professionals Work." The tech experts we reached out to tell you what you need to know about preparing for upcoming regulations and keeping pace with the rise of on-the-go technology that can be accessed anywhere, anytime. While it's impossible to entirely pre- dict where the industry will be a year from now, this month's contributors have presented the changes and trends that should be on everyone's radar.
