mnotes Breaking the Mold The Women Who Are Revolutionizing the Industry S o much about the mortgage industry is about the data—the stats, numbers, and figures that let us know whether we are on track or need to alter the course. This month, as part of our special Women in Housing issue, we instead take a more personal approach. Don't worry, you'll still get all the mortgage news you've come to rely on us for, but you'll also get the personal stories of the female leaders who help make this industry tick. First, we present our "Power Players"— Christina Boyle, Mary Frances Burleson, Kathryn Madison, Laurie Maggiano, Kathleen Malone, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters. These mortgage and housing veterans are the embodiment of grace under fire. Though they all have high-ranking positions, they never let the pressure show. Instead, they use the les- sons they have learned throughout their careers to inspire other women and en- courage them to follow in their footsteps. We are also honored to present our inaugural "Leading Ladies" list. The 40 phenomenal women featured in this sec- tion were nominated by their peers in the industry, who cited all the qualities that make them strong leaders—such as their intelligence, drive, and pursuit of innova- tion. Representing all the differing seg- ments of the industry, our 2015 "Leading Ladies" are ready to tackle the challenges the housing and mortgage markets will continue to face–and there is no one else we would want leading the charge. Once you have explored this month's special profiles, make sure to read, "Rising from the Ranks," in which contributor Aly Yale explores the female executive's experience in the mortgage industry. As Yale notes, while a growing number of women are making successful careers in mortgage, the upper echelons are still predominately populated by men. In addition to profiling the women working within our industry, this issue is also dedicated to exploring the female consumer experience in the mort- gage market. In "Gender Bias and the American Dream," University of Texas at Austin School of Law professor A. Michele Dickerson explores the unique hurdles that women face in the U.S. housing market. Some topics explored include housing discrimination, income gap, and the experience of single women in the marketplace. In the same vein, "Woman of the House" by Katie Buitrago and Spencer Cowan uses data gathered from Chicago mortgage applications to answer a vital question: Are mortgage loans are easier for men to obtain than for women? While women have come a long way since the days of coverture laws, it is clear that disadvantages still exist that hinders a level playing field, and Buitrago and Cowan dive into those in this piece. Lastly, Becky Walzak gives us an insider's perspective on how lenders can help bring a greater number of women to the market in "The Lending Gap." Walzak also takes a look at how income levels between men and women can fac- tor into mortgage lending decisions. This is a special issue. To see all the accomplishments the women of this in- dustry have achieved is truly a humbling sight, and I thank the individual women who have shared their stories with us, as well as the companies and industry partners who have supported them along their journey.
