MNOTES S teve Jobs, who knew a thing or two about inventions that can completely change a culture, once said, "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." Jobs' words are apropos for the mortgage industry in 2016. As we see more and more technological advances made with the goal of transforming the mortgage industry into something that is more accessible, more liquid, and generally easier to understand, it is apparent that the industry currently features more than its share of leaders. This month, we take a closer look at some of those innovators and the way they are moving the industry. In our cover story, "Turning Knowledge into Power," we traveled to the tech-booming city of San Francisco to go in-depth with HousingCanary and their housing forecasting models created to help homeowners, appraisers, agents, lenders, and investors simply "make better real estate decisions." A little innovation was necessary in order to help military families cope with financial and housing-related issues when service members return home, which writer Phil Britt visits in his feature, "Homeward Bound." Britt interviews John Pray, Jr., president and CEO of Operation Homefront, a non- profit organization that assists member of the military with every aspect of their transition to civilian life—particularly providing them with rent-free or mortgage-free housing. Technology is going to play a critical role for compliance in the future, according to both Clayton Holdings Director of Regulatory Compliance John Levonick and Capsilon Corporation CEO Sanjeev Malaney. In their respective features, "Oh No . . . Not Another TRID Article!" and "Automation is the Answer," Levonick and Malaney discuss why they believe technology is the best route forward for the industry in the TRID era. Levonick's piece covers why investors need to embrace technology, while Malaney goes at it from the lender standpoint. Finally, fintech industry veteran Dustin Sauter, founder of software solutions provider OrangeGrid, goes "Inside the Mind of the Millennial," and discusses the juxtaposition between the innovative, entrepreneurial spirits of generation Y and the relatively static financial services industry. While the age-old debate continues to rage around whether or not progress is inevitable, one thing is certain—these guys are not sitting around waiting for the mortgage industry to move or change. They are moving the industry themselves. What will be the next big innovation in the mortgage industry, and who will be responsible for it? As quickly as technology moves, we may know the answers to those questions sooner than we think.
