Perhaps the number of bedrooms or whether there's a pool in the backyard? While these features will all impact a buyer's decision, for most people, location is king. While a borrower may want to purchase a home in a location with all the perfect amenities—that comes with a price. So which states could make having it all into reality? The Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC) compiled a list of the most affordable states as of Q3 2017, and ranked them by an overall cost of living index. MERIC derives the cost of living index for each state by averaging the indices of participating cities and metropolitan areas in that state, based on cost of living considerations such as housing, utilities, transportation, and health.
