MNOTES Moving From Dream to Reality W ith the housing market experiencing record low inventory and a lack of affordable options, what was once called "the American Dream of homeownership" has started to feel like a pipe dream. Despite the challenges the market may present, the team at JPMorgan Chase is working to make housing accessible again. For this month's cover story, "Delivering Homeownership," MReport's Radhika Ojha delved into this topic and more with Chase Home Lending's product head, Erik Schmitt. When asked why Schmitt loves his current role, the answer was simple—the ability to meet customers. "I actually get to help individual customers and seeing the immediate satisfaction of that customer, whether it's getting their first home, helping with their refinance, or helping a family stay in their home if they're facing a hard financial situation, is so much more satisfying than doing large scale policy work." Another factor that is making the mortgage process more easily accessible for borrowers is its digitization, as Brent Rasmussen of Carrington explains in "Cleaning Up the Paper Trail." Rasmussen discusses the balance between the new technological advancements that are making headway in streamlining the online mortgage, but why customer service is still critical. Next Blend's Erin Collard explains how tech is helping lenders make smarter lending decisions, to reach unbanked or underbanked demographics in "Smart Lending." Lastly, SLK's Melanie Cornelius carries our tech theme over into the title industry in "Driving Title Forward," where she explained how new tech, coupled with skilled third-party service providers is helping companies feel secure that they are getting an accurate chain of title. As this issue illustrates, although the tools of the trade may change and evolve, the bottom line will always be to help borrow- ers feel at ease with the mortgage process.
