mnotes Today's High-Tech Mortgage Marketplace T oday's electronic mortgage offerings can seem like nothing but jargon to those clinging to old-school paper offerings. Whether the discussion surrounds e-recording, e-signing, e-lending, or some other iteration, it's easy to get bogged down in the tech-talk and miss the true impact of such technology on the mortgage industry. With the importance of attracting millennials to the housing market, adopting new technologies isn't an option; it's a requirement to stay ahead of the competition. In this month's cover story, "Back to the Future" we examine the halt- ing history surrounding the industry's adoption of e-mortgages. The integration of new technology into already estab- lished procedures hasn't always been readily accepted, and the combination of the housing slowdown and lagging of government acceptance has meant that the industry is only now recognizing the true power of e-technology. Speaking of the government get- ting on board, "Taking the Leap" by Mountain America Credit Union's VP of Mortgage Services, Amy Moser, gives a first-hand account of adopting an e-lending platform by one of the credi- tors chosen for the CFPB's e-Closing Pilot Program. Moser makes a compel- ling argument for how the switch to e-lending can benefit both the lender and consumer, but she doesn't shy away from the challenges implementing such a system poses. Giving the mortgage insurer's per- spective on implementing technology into your business is Jerry Murphy of MGIC. In his article, "From Paper Trail to Super Highway," Murphy, who is VP of field operations at the MI powerhouse, explains how quickly the MI business has come in terms of e- technology from as recently as the early 2000s. Long gone are the days of being buried under stacks of unorganized papers. A new era is upon the MI com- pany—one where tech leads the way. Our corporate profile on DocMagic, "Appreciating Assets," puts a personal face on the new technologies we've dedicated this issue to. This leader in loan document preparation, compli- ance, and delivery solutions graciously opened their doors to us, and president and CEO Dominic Iannitti gave us a candid look at how his company, which started with a handful of employees in the 1980s, has grown to lead the charge of e-mortgage adoption. Whether you're well on your way to incorporating e-technology into your business or are just starting the journey, this issue is chock-full of takeaways from knowledgeable pros that have made the leap firsthand. Rather than going it alone in this new arena, learn from their successes, setbacks, and day- to-day methodology.
