64 | TH E M R EP O RT Final Thoughts A New Sheriff is in Town Last month Ben Carson—neurosurgeon turned politician—was sworn in as the 17th Secretary of the Department Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In honor of this new era, we reviewed the notable statements the new chief made himself, as well as reactions to HUD news and notable Carson quips throughout the month. "There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships . . ." Carson was criticized for calling slaves immigrants during his first address to HUD staff last month. "devastating and hard-hearted" MARC MORIAL, President of The National Urban League, on the proposed $6 billion cut in HUD funding. "Detroit will be one of the crown jewels of this nation." In March, Secretary Carson took a three-day listening tour in Detroit, his hometown. HUD said this gave him an "opportunity to hear directly from key stakeholders who rely upon and support public housing." Carson made this statement while visiting Benjamin Carson High School. "Getting rid of people like me will only hurt his agenda." SHERMICHAEL SINGLETON, the HUD staffer who says he was fired for criticizing Trump in a pre-election op-ed had this to say about this untimely departure from the agency. "Right now, our country is the patient." Carson made this statement during his swearing-in ceremony.
