MNOTES Checks and Balances T ime and time again when we poll industry professionals on what topics are a top priority for them, the resounding answer is compliance. With shifting regs and a fluctuating market, it is more important than ever to stay on top of how rule changes impact your business. In "A Balancing Act With Compliance Regulation," MReport talks to industry leaders about the regulatory landscape, how it's impacted lenders, and what businesses should be doing to make sure they're staying on track. It's a challenging environment, made more diffi- cult by the sheer volume of regulations and the fast pace of change. Mortgage professionals "have an ever-present fear of being regulated out of business," said loanDepot's General Counsel Peter Macdonald. "Loans are harder to make today than they were 10 years ago. With every new regulation implemented, that difficulty only increases." The challenges facing the mortgage industry go well beyond com- pliance. In this month's Take 5 department, cryptocurrency expert and Trive CEO David Mondrus talks about how disruptive technol- ogies like blockchain and bitcoin are changing the mortgage industry. The title industry also is grappling with the impacts of blockchain technology. Michael Haltman, President of Hallmark Abstract Service in New York City, writes in "The Building Blocks of Title" about how the promise of blockchain may be weighed down by obstacles in its way. Nothing is holding down Veterans Affairs loans other than a lot of myth-making, contends Hon. Joseph J. Murin, Chairman Emeritus of NewDay USA, a nationwide VA mortgage lender. In "Ensuring Veteran Lending is in Safe Hands," Murin pops the bubble on five things people get wrong about this loan option. Of course, technology and compliance need to co-exist as origi- nators look to tighten timelines and streamline processes. Michael Riddle, the Managing Director of Mortgage Resources Group, LLC, argues lenders need to innovate to win in "Navigating the Mortgage Ecosystem." If there's one thing this issue speaks to, it's uncertainty, which is not the mortgage professionals' friend. But it isn't going away, either. Maybe it's time to embrace it.
