mnotes Engaging the Borrower The Necessary Puzzle Piece to Invigorating the Housing Market W ith the summer housing markets heating up, we've dedicated our July issue to reaching potential homeowners—whether they had trouble getting financing after the recession, are coming back from a foreclosure, or are the much-talked about millennial generation. In MReport's exclusive interview with Edward Golding, the new Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Housing, candidly answers questions about the future of U.S. housing and the role he hopes to play. The FHA and HUD are crucial in facilitating homeownership for low-income groups— through low-cost mortgage insurance, cracking down on predatory lending practices, and providing liquidity to the marketplace. Also touching on the topic of making homeownership possible for low-income and otherwise disenfranchised borrow- ers is Tonya Todd, SVP of Affordable Housing Programs at Mountain West Financial, Inc. In her article, "Revitalizing the American Dream," Todd outlines down payment assistance and specialty programs currently avail- able to potential buyers. Todd believes lenders are "in an ideal position to find a homeownership program that fits a potential homebuyer's needs." One potential borrower group that lenders are eager to bring to the clos- ing table are millennials. In his ar- ticle "Millennials on the Move," Jim Jumpe, VP of Marketing and Product Development at Arch MI, delves in the psyche of this sought-after demographic and explains what may be keeping them from becoming homeowners and what the industry can do to change their mindset in favor of buying. Lastly, Chad Jampedro, president of GSF Mortgage Corp., asks the ques- tion of what can sway homeowners to the market in his article "The Tipping Point." Despite today's rising employ- ment, low interest rates, and an overall improving economy, Jampedro notes that there is still something keeping buyers from the marketplace. One sign of hope is the rising number of renters, which could signal that millennials and young families are finally leaving the family home and are on the path toward even- tual homeownership. Effective marketing to reach today's borrowers is crucial for a sustainable recovery. Consumers today access information on a broad array of platforms. The optimal methods to reach these consumers constantly changes with the market and technology, but our July contributors have outlined a variety of ways to reach tomorrow's homebuyer.
